Ogamba assures no student is neglected in education policy
In a significant move towards ensuring equity and sustainability in higher education financing, a new funding model has been introduced at Kenyatta University. This change, which came into effect in 2023, replaced the previous blanket funding approach with a needs-based system that takes into account students' economic backgrounds.
Prof. Paul Wainaina, the Vice-Chancellor of Kenyatta University, has welcomed the appointments of Joash Keraita and Isaac Litali to the university council. These appointments mark a new chapter in Kenyatta University's governance and are expected to provide strategic guidance and oversight to the institution.
The new funding model has already proven efficient, ensuring that students are supported irrespective of their family status. Between 16 to 60 percent of students are now paying an average of Sh28,000 as their portion of school fees, while the rest is covered by the government. This shift aims to maximise the disbursement of funds for learners across the country.
The new funding model prioritises prudent management of resources and innovative strategies. It is part of a broader reform aimed at repositioning public universities for sustainable growth. The University Councils, essential in shaping the stability and performance of institutions, play a crucial role in this transformation.
The inauguration of the reconstituted Kenyatta University Council was presided over by Dr. Ogamba. A tree-planting ceremony, led by the Cabinet Secretary alongside council members and university management, symbolised growth, unity, and commitment to the future of higher education.
However, the name of the new member of the Kenyatta University Council appointed by Julius Ogamba on July 25 is not publicly available at this time.
Prof. Wainaina described the tree-planting ceremony as a symbol of growth, unity, and commitment to the future of higher education. This new funding model in higher education is aimed at ensuring equity and sustainability, positioning Kenyatta University and other public universities for sustainable growth.
