OAIC Commits to Net Zero by 2030, Aims to Slash Emissions
The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) has adopted ambitious carbon reduction targets, aiming to achieve Net Zero by 2030. This commitment aligns with the Australian Government's Net Zero in Government Operations Strategy, released in November 2023, and is part of the broader effort to decarbonise Australia's economy.
The OAIC's baseline emissions for the financial year 2022-23 were 89tC02e, with Scope 2 emissions accounting for 38tC02e and Scope 3 emissions making up the remaining 51tC02e. To reach its goal, the OAIC will focus on reducing both its direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2) emissions. Key areas of focus include Net Zero Buildings and Net Zero Energy.
The OAIC's Emissions Reduction Plan 2024-2026, developed in line with the Net Zero in Government Operations Strategy, outlines specific actions to achieve these targets. The plan aims to build on existing measures and introduce new ones to reduce emissions. The Australian Information Commissioner, Angelene Falk, supports this initiative, which is part of the Australian Government's broader Emissions Reduction Plan 2024-2026.
The OAIC's commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2030 is a significant step towards the Australian Government's goal of decarbonising the nation's economy. By following the Net Zero in Government Operations Strategy and implementing its Emissions Reduction Plan, the OAIC demonstrates a strong dedication to leading by example in emissions reduction.
