NTPC Announces Major Investment in Renewable Energy in Telangana

The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has revealed plans to invest approximately INR 80,000 crore (Rs 800 billion) in renewable energy projects in the state of Telangana, with a focus on solar and wind power generation.

Key details of NTPC's renewable power investment plans in Telangana are as follows:

  • Investment amount: The NTPC aims to invest around INR 80,000 crore dedicated to solar and wind power projects across the state.
  • Focus on floating solar power: Telangana has a significant estimated capacity of 6,700 MW for floating solar projects, which NTPC intends to develop, recognizing this as a major clean energy potential in the state.
  • Alignment with Telangana’s renewable energy targets: NTPC’s investment aligns with Telangana’s recently announced renewable energy policy that targets:
  • Adding 20,000 MW of renewable energy and storage capacity by 2030.
  • Developing a cumulative renewable energy ecosystem of over 30.5 GW by 2030, expanding to more than 47 GW by 2035.
  • State government support: Telangana’s Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has assured full cooperation, including facilitating clearances and infrastructure support for NTPC’s projects.
  • Additional renewable initiatives in Telangana: The state also plans large-scale deployment of electric vehicle charging stations (6,000 by 2030 and doubling by 2035), complementing renewable energy expansion.
  • Transmission and evacuation capacity: TG Transco has proposed transmission schemes with a combined capacity of 19 GW to support renewable power evacuation, indicating significant grid infrastructure development.

NTPC's Chairman and Managing Director, Gurudeep Singh, conveyed this intention during a meeting with Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, which took place on Saturday, though the exact location was unspecified. The NTPC is willing to generate 6,700 megawatts of floating solar power in Telangana state.

This investment plan is part of Telangana’s broader ambition to become a leader in clean energy production in India. The state's renewable energy policy aims to add 20,000 MW of renewable energy and storage capacity by 2030 and develop a cumulative renewable energy ecosystem of over 30.5 GW by 2030, expanding to more than 47 GW by 2035.

Meanwhile, the US market has seen gains with the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and NASDAQ Composite all gaining. The NASDAQ Composite closed the week at a record high, while the NBCC's net profit for Q1 has risen by 26% to INR 135 crore.
