Norwegian Air Shuttle Revives Billund Operations, Adds 10 New Routes
Norwegian Air Shuttle is set to revive its operations in Billund, Denmark, on October 1, 2025. This move comes after the airline's previous attempt to establish a significant presence in the region. Details about the new base are scarce, but it's expected to bring new routes and jobs to the area.
The airline will introduce 10 new routes from Billund, with a focus on southern European destinations. These include popular summer holiday spots like Barcelona, Chania, Gran Canaria, Malta, Naples, Nice, and Rome-Fiumicino. Additionally, Norwegian will serve Edinburgh and Porto year-round. Notably, some routes will operate only during the summer months to cater to seasonal demand.
Norwegian's return to Billund follows the closure of American Airlines' base at the airport. The Irish low-cost carrier pulled out due to a failed agreement with the airport operator and a dispute over passenger charges. Norwegian, however, seems confident in the potential of the Billund market.
To support its expansion, Norwegian will acquire 30 more Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The airline's comeback in Billund is expected to boost connectivity, stimulate tourism, and create new employment opportunities in the region. With a mix of year-round and seasonal routes, Norwegian aims to tap into both business and leisure travel markets.
