Noodles & Company's CEO, Drew Madsen, announces his departure from the company.
Joseph D. Christina, a seasoned restaurant industry veteran, is set to take over as the CEO of Noodles & Company on August 31, 2025. Christina, who has previously served as the company's president and chief operating officer, will step into the role following the departure of Drew Madsen due to personal medical reasons.
Christina brings a wealth of experience to Noodles & Company, having spent nearly 30 years at Burger King, where he rose through the ranks from a restaurant manager to Senior Vice President of U.S. Franchise Operations for the West Division. He has also held leadership roles as CEO and President at Church’s Chicken and, most recently, at Tijuana Flats.
At Tijuana Flats, Christina guided the company through significant challenges and helped modernize its operations and expand its footprint. His expertise covers operational excellence, financial management, market development, marketing, human resources, and franchise leadership. He has a proven track record of driving revenue and EBITDA growth in competitive markets through strategic planning and disciplined execution.
Christina’s appointment comes at a crucial juncture for Noodles & Company, which is currently undergoing a brand revitalization. This revitalization includes a comprehensive menu overhaul and positive sales momentum initiated under Madsen’s leadership. The menu overhaul, rolled out in March, is beginning to show results, with systemwide same-store sales up 4.4% in the first quarter, including a 1.4% increase in traffic.
Despite the positive sales trend, Noodles & Company's stock price has fallen to lows that have twice prompted warnings of delisting from the Nasdaq. The Broomfield, Colorado-based chain has struggled with sales deterioration for years, leading to the ousting of former CEO Dave Boennighausen in 2023 and the subsequent appointment of Madsen.
Madsen, who will continue to serve on the board of directors after his departure, expressed gratitude for his time at Noodles & Company. Jeff Jones, board chair of Noodles & Company, also expressed gratitude for Madsen's leadership and service. Madsen will stay on with the company through August to facilitate the transition.
Christina expressed his gratitude for joining Noodles & Company under Madsen's leadership and looks forward to enhancing menu offerings to unlock long-term value for all stakeholders.
