New Zealand's new-vehicle sales surged in September 2025, with a 28% increase compared to August. Toyota RAV4 retained its top spot, while Ford Ranger led news sales in the light commercial vehicle segment.
Toyota RAV4, with 1,281 sales, maintained its position as the best-selling vehicle, capturing a 10% market share among top sellers. Toyota also topped the list of automakers with the most new vehicle sales in September. Following the RAV4 were the Mitsubishi Outlander and ASX, with 810 and 805 sales respectively. Toyota Hilux and Mitsubishi Triton trailed with 769 and 342 sales.
Light passenger vehicles, including SUVs, drove the sales increase, with 10,364 registrations compared to 8,090 in August. Ford Ranger was the top-selling light commercial vehicle, with 827 sales, while overall light commercial vehicle sales remained steady at 3,078 registrations in September.
Electric vehicle sales saw a modest rise, reaching 608 registrations in September from 385 in August. Plug-in hybrid sales remained relatively stable, with 389 registrations in September compared to 408 in August.
September 2025 saw a significant boost in new-vehicle sales in New Zealand, led by light passenger vehicles and the Toyota RAV4. Ford Ranger dominated light commercial vehicle news. Electric vehicle sales also showed promising growth.
