New Streaming Service Kava Launches in Africa's Booming Market

A new player is set to enter Africa's booming streaming market. Kava, a joint venture between Inkblot Studios and Filmhouse Group, is launching on August 1, 2025. This comes as Netflix and Amazon Prime have scaled back their news investments in the region.

Kava aims to celebrate African identity and creativity by focusing on Nollywood titles. It will debut with over 30 films and series, including popular hits like Alakada Bad and Boujee, Owambe Thieves, and What About Us. New titles will be added weekly, with original content also planned.

The African streaming market is projected to reach 46.3 million users by 2029, with revenues expected to hit $5.4 million in 2025. However, monetisation has been a challenge for local services like IROKOtv. YouTube, while popular for Nollywood content, lacks consistent ad revenues and brand sponsorships.

Kava's launch is timely, given the expected growth in the African streaming market. By focusing on Nollywood titles and celebrating African heritage, it seeks to fill a gap left by the scaled-back investments of Netflix and Amazon Prime. With new titles added weekly and original content planned, Kava promises to keep African audiences engaged.
