New company train for Metro line 1 arrives at depot in Collegno
The city of Turin, Italy, has welcomed the arrival of the new Metropolis 'Boa' trains, marking a significant milestone in the enhancement of its Metro Line 1. These trains, manufactured at Alstom's Valenciennes Petite Forêt facility in France, are designed to boost capacity, improve sustainability, and offer a superior passenger experience.
## Key Features
Each train consists of four intercommunicating carriages, facilitating ease of movement for passengers throughout the train. This design not only enhances the flow of passengers but also provides a spacious and comfortable environment.
## Benefits
The new trains are expected to significantly increase the capacity of Line 1, allowing more passengers to be transported efficiently. This upgrade supports the city's sustainability goals by potentially reducing environmental impact compared to older models.
The intercommunicating carriages, well-lit and functional, feature innovative LED linear lighting and multimedia screens. Each carriage also has a dedicated area for passengers with reduced mobility, ensuring accessibility for all.
Bernardino Chiaia, President and CEO of Infra. To, views the arrival of the new Metropolis train as an important milestone in the implementation of the project to improve mobility and the quality of urban public transport. Chiara Foglietta, Mobility and Transport Councillor for the City of Turin, shares this sentiment, viewing the introduction of these new trains as a qualitative leap forward in the service offered to citizens, a concrete investment in the future of Turin's public transport.
The new trains mark the first update of the fleet since the Line 1 entered commercial service. The city has requested additional funding of EUR 150 million for the purchase of 12 additional trains with similar characteristics. The remaining trains will be delivered by 2025.
The supply of the new trains and the new CBTC signalling system is part of a contract worth EUR 156 million. The contract also includes the upgrade of the on-board automatisms of the existing rolling stock for the extension of Line 1 to "Cascine Vica".
The new trains are equipped with the most advanced technologies, including a new automation system and a real-time video surveillance system connected to the command and control post. The train will enter service at the same time as the activation of the new signalling and train running control system (CBTC).
This upgrade to the Turin Metro system underscores a commitment to both passenger comfort and environmental responsibility, setting a positive precedent for the future of public transport in the city.
