Navigating your way to the Wiesn: A guide
Munich's public transportation system will undergo some changes during the Oktoberfest period, from September 19-21, to accommodate the increased passenger volume and event-specific logistics.
The central transfer point for night lines is Karlsplatz (Stachus), covering the entire city area. Tram 18, however, is divided into two sections between Gondrellplatz - Stachus and Sendlinger Tor - Schwanseestraße during the same period. The Sendlinger Tor stop for Tram 18 has been relocated to stop 5 in the tram loop, before the church, while at Karlsplatz (Stachus), Tram 18 towards Westendstraße departs from stop 7 in Prielmayerstraße.
Tram 27 runs approximately from 8 to 12 pm on the Petuelring - Kurfürstenplatz - Pinakotheken - Karlsplatz (Stachus) route. Tram 19 is interrupted from around 6:30 AM to 3:30 PM, operating in the sections Westendstraße - Westfriedhof and Max-Weber-Platz - Berg am Laim Bf, with the Karlsplatz (Stachus) - Maximilianeum section omitted.
CityRing 58/68 stops at Goetheplatz and Georg-Hirth-Platz, among others. Tram 18 and 19 stop at Holzapfelstraße and Hermann-Lingg-Straße along Landsberger Straße/Bayerstraße, providing a short walk to the Oktoberfest.
For those arriving from the west on U-Bahn lines 4 and 5, the MVG recommends getting off at Schwanthalerhöhe and walking to the festival grounds. U-Bahn lines 3 and 6 are also recommended for reaching the Theresienwiese, with the Goetheplatz and Poccistraße stations being a few minutes' walk from the festival grounds.
Tram lines 20 and 21 stop at Hauptbahnhof and Hauptbahnhof Nord, respectively, with an easy walk to the festival grounds. Tram 17 is divided into two sections from approximately 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM: Amalienburgstraße to Karlsplatz (Stachus) and Sendlinger Tor to St. Emmeram.
Due to the traditional Wiesn entry procession of innkeepers and the trachten and shooting club parade, some streets in the city center will be temporarily closed, resulting in tram and bus reroutes. Replacement bus 16 (Effnerplatz - Tivolistraße - Lehel - Isartor) can resume operation around 3 PM due to street closures for the parade setup.
Bus line 52 runs approximately from 8 to 12:30 pm on the shortened route Tierpark (Alemannenstraße) - Candidplatz - Kolumbusplatz Nord - Mariahilfplatz - Baaderstraße. Bus lines 58 and 68 (CityRing) are interrupted from approximately 9 to 12:30 pm between Hauptbahnhof Nord and Goetheplatz.
Tram lines 16 and 17 serve the Hackerbrücke stop, which is just a few minutes' walk from the Theresienwiese. Tram 16 operates from approximately 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM on a shortened route between Romanplatz and Hackerbrücke (ZOB), via Hauptbahnhof Nord and Karlsplatz (Stachus).
Subway trains run until 1:30 AM every night during the Wiesn at 10-minute intervals. Night Buses N40 and N41 reach the stops Goetheplatz and Poccistraße. Night Tram N19 serves the stops Holzapfelstraße and Hermann-Lingg-Straße, while Night Tram N17 serves the stop Hackerbrücke.
For campers, Bus 135 runs more frequently and later than usual between Thalkirchen and Campingplatz Thalkirchen during the Wiesn, until around 1:30 AM, connecting the camping ground to U3. In addition, Bus 62 runs between Rotkreuzplatz and Sendlinger Tor up to two hours later (until midnight) at 10-minute intervals, including Sunday mornings. Bus 159 is reinforced with numerous trips between Campingplatz Obermenzing/Paulaner Brauerei and Pasing Bf.
The walk from the main station to the Theresienwiese can take approximately 15 minutes on foot, with the route well signposted and suitable for Oktoberfest visitors. The frequency on U4/U5 lines is increased, with trains running every 2-3 minutes between Theresienwiese and the city center at peak times. Tram 28 resumes operation after the parade around 12 pm, and Night Bus Ring Lines N43 and N44 stop at Herzog-Ernst-Platz.
The special circumstances causing operational changes for trams and buses in Munich on the weekend of September 19-21 during the Oktoberfest period are related to the Oktoberfest event itself. For example, tram lines 19, N19, and 21 run their regular routes over Maximilianstraße and the Maxmonument during this time, and certain service adjustments, such as "stop on request" after 9 pm outside the middle ring, are implemented to better serve passengers during the festival period.
