Münster's Aasee Gets Floating Plant Islands for Climate Resilience

Münster's Aasee has seen the introduction of floating plant islands as part of a climate adaptation project. The city is leading this initiative, with the Umweltamt and Amt für Grünflächen, Umwelt und Nachhaltigkeit playing crucial roles. This week, specialists are examining the fish population to make the lake more resilient against drought and heat.

The city of Münster is responsible for planning, implementing, and financing climate-related projects. In this case, they have collaborated with the WWU Münster to launch a pilot project using floating plant islands to strengthen the lake's ecology and mitigate climate change impacts. Non-predatory fish are being caught to maintain a balance between predatory and non-predatory species, aiming for self-regulation of fish populations in the future. Water pumps have been installed to enhance oxygen supply during summer, and predatory fish like pike and zander are being released to balance the fish population.

The introduction of floating plant islands and the management of fish populations are part of Münster's ongoing efforts to adapt to climate change. These measures aim to make Aasee more resilient and maintain a healthy ecosystem. For detailed information, the public is encouraged to contact the Amt für Grünflächen, Umwelt und Nachhaltigkeit or consult the city's official website.
