Fireworks Ban Push for Interior Ministers' Conference
Multitude of Individuals Advocate for Prohibition of Sales
Berlin - Empowered by recent poll numbers, the Berlin Police Union (GdP) is intensifying their call for a fireworks ban at the upcoming Interior Ministers' Conference (IMC). "The public is ripe for a shift in mindset on New Year's Eve," declared Berlin GdP chairman Stephan Weh to the German Press Agency. The data supporting this sentiment comes from a poll conducted by the Berlin branch of the union from April 3 to 13, spanning the nation. "The once festive and joyous event is increasingly tied to fear, insecurity, and anger. It's high time for politicians to take action," said Weh. He's shared the poll findings with IMC chairman, Bremen's Interior Senator Ulrich Mäurer, to be discussed at the next meeting (June 11-13).
Broad Support for Ban in Poll
According to union statistics, an overwhelming 97% of the 178,022 participants in the non-representative online survey favor a fireworks ban. A similar percentage (93%) support a sales ban, and 95% of respondents pledged to adhere to such a ban, avoiding purchases online or abroad. Instead, a vast majority (91%) favor organized events featuring certified pyrotechnicians. Nearly half (49%) of poll participants express interest in attending these events. As many as 70% of people claim they no longer venture out onto the streets on New Year's Eve.
Over Two Million Supporters for Petition
The union reports that individuals from all federal states participated in the poll, with participation also encouraged on social media platforms. More women (63%) than men (35%) participated, while 85% of respondents were aged over 30 years old. The Berlin GdP regional branch launched a petition for a fireworks ban at the beginning of 2023, which has since garnered the signatures of over two million people. Other organizations are also advocating for a ban. In addition, the German Environmental Aid has another petition in circulation.
