Toyota Bids Farewell to Honorary Chairman Shoichiro Toyoda
Toyota Motor Corporation held farewell events on April 24, marking the end of an era with the passing of Honorary Chairman Shoichiro Toyoda. The events, held in Tokyo, Toyota City, and four other locations, were attended by approximately 6,000 guests, including Chairman Akio Toyoda who spoke on behalf of the family.
The theme of the events was "Making products (monozukuri) and developing people," a message that was reaffirmed by Akio during his speech. He quoted his late grandfather, saying, "We must always strive to make products and develop people."
Chairman Akio's leadership change was not specified, but he took the opportunity to honour Shoichiro's legacy. He spoke about the guidance he received while developing the first-generation Prius, highlighting the significant impact Shoichiro had on Toyota's innovative approach.
The events featured displays showcasing a lifetime of artifacts and cars, including those that held a special significance in Shoichiro's life. Chairman of the Board of Directors Takeshi Uchiyamada also delivered a condolence message at the Tokyo ceremony, sharing memories of the Honorary Chairman while developing the first-generation Prius. He spoke about the guidance he received from Shoichiro, emphasizing his role in shaping Toyota's commitment to quality and innovation.
Shoichiro Toyoda, a prominent Japanese industrialist and leader of Toyota Motor Corporation, passed away in February at the age of 97. He served as the president and chairman of Toyota in the late 20th century before becoming honorary chairman in 1999. His impact extended beyond corporate leadership; he infused Toyota with a strong safety and innovation culture, famously aiming for the ambitious goal of zero traffic casualties, influencing Toyota's approach to autonomous driving and road safety technologies.
The Honorary Chairman left an enduring message to employees, one that continues to guide Toyota today.
