Tbilisi's Varketili Metro Station Nearly Ready for Reopening After Decade-Long Rehabilitation

The long-awaited reopening of the Varketili Metro station in Tbilisi, Georgia, is just around the corner, with the station expected to resume operations within days as of August 2025 [1][2]. The Tbilisi Mayor has confirmed that the station will be fully rehabilitated by the end of the year [3].

The rehabilitation of the Varketili Metro station has been a complex and challenging process, spanning approximately 9 years and costing over 5 million GEL. The project has faced numerous delays and postponed completion dates over the years, reflecting significant scheduling difficulties [4].

The primary challenge in the Varketili Metro rehabilitation was the lack of a suitable expert group in Georgia. As a result, the tunnel underwent a full study by foreign specialists and the National Bureau of Forensic Expertise [5]. The structural issues with the arch of the station required reinforcement, causing a halt in operations [6].

Despite these challenges, the reopening of the Varketili Metro station will not disrupt commuters' travel schedules during metro service hours. The adjustments to the schedule at Varketili Metro station are being made to facilitate the completion of rehabilitation works [7]. The rehabilitation works will not affect the metro service during the adjusted hours.

Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze apologised for the inconvenience caused by the Varketili Metro station's rehabilitation and admitted that temporary buses and minibuses could not fully replace the metro's capacity during the station's closure [8]. The metro service hours at Varketili Metro station will be adjusted to open one hour later and close one hour earlier [9].

The Varketili Metro rehabilitation works will continue until the end of the year to complete all renovations fully. Any remaining construction at Varketili Metro station will be carried out only after metro service hours [10]. The adjusted schedule aims to allow more time for work and a faster completion [11].

As the Varketili Metro station prepares to reopen, the public can look forward to a modernised transportation system in Tbilisi.
