Mattersburg Line's €143M Upgrade Promises Faster, Greener Travel
The Mattersburg line is set for a significant upgrade, with electrification and modernization works commencing. This €143 million investment promises improved commute for locals and students, reduced CO2 emissions, and less noise pollution.
The modernization, slated for completion by the end of 2027, includes electrification, barrier-free upgrades, and track renewal. The main construction phase is scheduled for 2026, during which the line will be closed from 9 February to 12 December.
Currently, preparations are underway, with the construction phase from October to November 2025 focusing on laying foundations for overhead line masts. Consequently, no trains will run between Wiener Neustadt Hauptbahnhof and Sopron from 6 to 25 October and from 3 to 29 November 2025. The exact reason for these closures remains unclear, despite extensive searches.
The Mattersburg line, a central connection for the district, will become more attractive post-modernization. ÖBB assures better connections, less CO2 emissions, and reduced noise pollution. Despite temporary closures, the long-term benefits are expected to significantly improve commute for locals and students.
