Sparkasse Phases Out Kwitt Payment Method, Offers Wero App as Replacement

In a significant move, Sparkasse has announced that it will be discontinuing its popular Kwitt payment method on August 25th. This decision affects millions of customers who have been using this contactless and peer-to-peer payment service.

However, Sparkasse has not left its customers in the lurch. They are offering the Wero app as a replacement for the discontinued service. The Wero app, designed to be simpler than the discontinued payment method, allows users to send and receive money via a phone number or email address. Money can be transferred within ten seconds, making it a convenient option for quick transactions.

The recipient does not need to use the Wero app to receive a link with the corresponding IBAN. This feature ensures that even those who are not tech-savvy can still benefit from the service.

The discontinuation of Kwitt has caused some confusion among customers, but Sparkasse has provided clear guidance on the transition. Customers are being encouraged to switch to modern mobile payment solutions supported by Sparkasse, such as Google Pay or Apple Pay. These mobile wallets are fully compatible with Sparkasse cards starting in 2025/2026.

To add your Sparkasse card to Google Pay or Apple Pay, you can use the Sparkasse app or the respective wallet apps on your smartphone or smartwatch. When adding your card, you’ll verify it via the Sparkasse app, ensuring your account settings are up to date and secure for mobile payments.

It's important to note that until now, customers could use the discontinued payment method without registering an IBAN. This means that after August 25th, customers will no longer be able to use this method to send or request money.

While the Volksbank still uses the discontinued payment method, they plan to gradually phase it out and replace it. The discontinuation of Kwitt by Sparkasse is a significant development, marking a shift towards more modern and secure payment methods.

For a smooth transition, Sparkasse advises customers to follow the available setup tutorials and regulatory announcements from Sparkasse in their country. Activation of Wero requires only a phone number or email address, making it an accessible option for all customers.

As we move towards a more digital world, it's essential for businesses and individuals to adapt to new technologies. Sparkasse's decision to discontinue Kwitt and offer the Wero app as a replacement is a step in this direction, ensuring that their customers can continue to make secure and convenient payments.

Other Sparkasse customers might find the Wero app useful as an alternative to the discontinued Kwitt finance service, particularly since it allows for quick and easy money transfers. Businesses partnered with Sparkasse could consider offering Wero as a method of payment to cater to their customers who may switch from Kwitt.
