Catch that inferno in Backnang! 🔥

An inferno tore through a waste disposal facility in Backnang during the wee hours, consuming a storage hall. Firefighters are on the scene, battling this blazing beast.

Last night in Backnang's recycling facility (Rems-Murr district), a fierce fire erupted. The waste and the storage hall are going up in flames. Police estimate the damage to the company sits within the millions.

No Casualties Reported (Yet) 🤞

As the firefighters arrived, the hall was already a flaming inferno, with flames spreading swiftly, casting thick, dark smoke over the city. Tim Maier, the fire department's on-site spokesperson, informed our site that the waste was stored in the burning hall.

The firefighters managed to halt the flames' progress, according to Maier. At times, over 130 firefighters and other rescue personnel were deployed. A spokesperson for the Aalen police, which is responsible, confirmed earlier today that there were no casualties.

Where the Flame Began 🔎

The cause of the conflagration remains a mystery. The recycling plant is located in an industrial district in Backnang. Heinrich-Hertz-Straße has been closed in both directions between Weissacher Straße and B14 due to heavy smoke. The fire department sent out a warning to the residents via the "NINA" app due to the strong smoke development. Police still advise residents to keep their windows and doors shut and turn off air conditioning to avoid smoke toxins.

The inferno is now under control but the firefighters expect to work for several more hours to douse it completely.

Previous Flames at the Facility 🔥

There have been numerous blazes at the Backnang recycling plant, most recently last September. A pile of waste caught fire, but the flames were promptly quelled, and damage was estimated at 10,000 euros by police.

In late July 2015, a major fire erupted on the site, decimating a hall. More than 100 people and additional forces from neighboring cities were dispatched, requiring several turntable ladders. The waste was removed from the hall with the help of an excavator and a wheel loader, and hotspots were extinguished.
