Mandatory Driver's License Swap for Those Born After 1971 by Jan 19, 2025
Holders of driver's licenses born after 1971 must swap their paper licenses for a new one by January 19, 2025. This is to ensure validity during traffic checks. The exchange costs up to €30.30, including registered mail shipping.
The exchange process is straightforward and does not involve any examinations or medical checks, except for truck and bus licenses. All that's needed is a copy of the identity card or passport, a biometric passport photo, and the current driver's license. If the old license was not issued by Aschaffenburg's driver's license authority, a card index copy of the original issuing authority is required.
The new driver's license will be sent from the Federal Printing Office once the exchange is complete. It will be valid for 15 years. This exchange is mandatory for all licenses issued before January 19, 2013, with a final deadline of January 19, 2033. This is due to European regulations.
The EU mandates that all paper licenses issued before December 31, 1998, must be exchanged for credit card format licenses. The exchange process can be handled in writing, without a personal appearance at the driver's license office.
