Title: Cyber Intelligence Firm NSO Group Faces a Huge Settlement for the 2019 WhatsApp Hack
Hey there! Let's dive into some juicy tech news.
An Israel-based cybersecurity firm, the NSO Group, has been slapped with a hefty settlement for the 2019 security breach of WhatsApp. The company is behind the zero-click spyware Pegasus, used to infiltrate smartphones without user interaction, such as clicking a link or opening a message.
In 2019, WhatsApp sued NSO Group after discovering that Pegasus was used in an attack targeting its users, including human rights activists, journalists, and dissidents. After six years of litigation, a California federal jury determined that NSO Group is accountable for the hack of around 1,400 WhatsApp users' devices.
The jurors made this decision on Tuesday, following a judge's ruling in December that NSO Group was responsible for the hack and breach of contract. The verdict comes with a hefty fine, with NSO Group ordered to pay WhatsApp $167.3 million in punitive damages and about $444,000 in compensatory damages to Meta, WhatsApp's parent company.
NSO Group defended its technology, stating that it plays a vital role in preventing serious crime and terrorism and is deployed responsibly by authorized government agencies. They further mentioned that they will pursue legal remedies.
WhatsApp, in response, said it would donate a part of the settlement to organizations focused on defending people against spyware attacks.
"Today's verdict in WhatsApp’s case marks a significant legal victory against the development and use of illegal spyware that threatens the safety and privacy of everyone."
