Major tech giants, including Apple, Google, and Microsoft, pledge increased endorsement of the FIDO standard to expedite the introduction of passwordless login options.

In a significant move towards enhancing digital security, Apple, Google, and Microsoft have taken the lead in developing expanded capabilities for a passwordless sign-in standard. This standard, created by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium, aims to increase protection and eliminate outdated password-based authentication.

The new approach promises to provide users with a more secure sign-in experience compared to passwords and legacy multi-factor technologies such as one-time passcodes sent over SMS. Users will be able to use FIDO authentication on their mobile device to sign in to an app or website on a nearby device, regardless of the OS platform or browser they are running.

Apple's Senior Director of Platform Product Marketing, Kurt Knight, expressed the company's commitment to building products that offer maximum security and a transparent user experience. Google's Senior Director of Product Management, Mark Risher, hailed the milestone as the culmination of nearly a decade of work Google has done alongside FIDO, as part of their continued innovation towards a passwordless future.

Previously, implementations of the FIDO Alliance standards required users to sign in to each website or app with each device before they could use passwordless functionality. However, the new capabilities allow users to automatically access their FIDO sign-in on many of their devices without needing to register each account again.

Jen Easterly, Director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, applauded the commitment of private sector partners to open standards that add flexibility for service providers and a better user experience for customers. Alex Simons, Corporate Vice President, Identity Program Management at Microsoft, shared similar sentiments, believing that by working together as a community across platforms, they can achieve a vision of a passwordless world and make significant progress toward eliminating passwords.

The FIDO Alliance's mission aligns with those of the tech giants, with Google's mission stating that it aims to organise the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. Apple, which revolutionised personal technology with the introduction of the Macintosh in 1984, continues to lead the world in innovation with iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV.

Andrew Shikiar, executive director and CMO of the FIDO Alliance, applauded Apple, Google, and Microsoft for helping make user-friendly innovation in passwordless sign-ins a reality. The new capabilities are expected to become available across Apple, Google, and Microsoft platforms over the course of the coming year, marking a significant step towards a more secure and convenient digital future.
