Major case of money laundering prompts response from NBG
The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) has issued a statement regarding a large-scale illicit income legalization scheme, involving the laundering of approximately USD 624 million and EUR 35 million between 2022 and 2024.
According to the NBG, their risk-based supervisory approach is applied consistently to monitor and mitigate risks related to money laundering, terrorism financing, and international sanctions. This oversight role includes the transfer of information about suspected criminal activity to the relevant authorities.
The NBG's supervisory measures are aimed at safeguarding financial stability, and they enforce penalties when violations related to money laundering, terrorism financing, or international sanctions are detected.
In this particular case, a person has been arrested for money laundering, and investigations are ongoing, including the involvement of FPÖ members Mario Kunasek and Stefan Hermann in the Graz FPÖ financial scandal. The related fraudulent activities presumably took place between 2022 and 2024.
One individual has been detained on money laundering charges, and the case is being investigated by the Prosecutor's Office and the State Security Service.
The NBG has provided all requested information to investigators in a timely manner and in full compliance with legislative procedures. The NBG continues to supervise currency exchange points, and their supervisory approach is consistent with international standards.
The NBG's oversight role also includes monitoring risks at these currency exchange points. The bank ensures that their supervisory measures are within their mandate to safeguard financial stability.
The NBG will continue to enforce its regulations and cooperate with authorities to combat money laundering and maintain the integrity of Georgia's financial system.
