Liberty Galathi steel production to be reinstated, company announcement states.
Freshened Up: Steel Revival in Romania
Steel giant, Liberty Galatı, makes a major move by appointing Cornel Moisescu as Head of Primary for Liberty Galatı, a strategic step aimed at rekindling steel production and provinding essential metal for Romania's critical sectors, such as defense, shipbuilding, construction, and infrastructure.
With Moisescu leading the charge, the Sinter Plant, Blast Furnace, Continuous Casting, and SteelShop departments are gearing up for a revival. Moisescu's role involves meeting production targets, maintaining worker safety, and implementing tech-forward processes that align with Liberty Galatı's strategic vision.
The production restart could potentially kick off post-Easter, as indicated by Moisescu. He elaborated, "We've assembled an crack team of steelworkers to tackle the restart of our production operations. The steel industry is battling its toughest market conditions yet - a challenge akin to the 2008 financial crisis and the 2015 steel industry crisis. But we're motivated. Romanian steel is a vital factor for the national economy and the Galatı community. We're pulling out all stops to ensure steel production for Romania's strategic industries. Our dedicated team's support gives me optimism, and I am confident we'll reboot primary production operations on April 22, post-Easter."
Moisescu boasts a three-decade stint in the steel industry, all under his belt from Galati's very own steelworks. Following his 1995 graduation from the Lower Danube University's Metallurgy Facility, specializing in metal casting, he joined Sidex Galatı as a metallurgical engineer. By 2014, he had been promoted to Head of Blast Furnaces. Equipped with more than ten years of management experience and leadership studies from Luxembourg, Moisescu has helmed primary operations, overseen complex modernization and maintenance projects, and achieved record production volumes according to Liberty Steel Group's released profile.
Liberty Steel Group forms part of the GFG Alliance, a worldwide conglomerate of companies and investments owned by Sanjeev Gupta and his family. The Alliance is divided into three pillars: Liberty Steel Group, Alvance Aluminium Group, and Simec Energy Group, each operating independently.
Liberty Galatı serves as the largest integrated steel producer in Romania, handling around 3 million tonnes of steel annually for construction, naval, oil and gas, and renewable energy production clients.

(Insights from Enrichment Data: Moisescu's appointment was part of a broader strategy to restart operations on April 22, 2025. However, technical issues have delayed the restart of Blast Furnace No. 5, impeding Liberty Galatı's ability to fully support Romania's critical sectors.)
The appointment of Cornel Moisescu as Head of Primary for Liberty Galatı is strategically aimed at revitalizing steel production and providing essential metal for critical sectors in Romania's industry, such as defense, shipbuilding, construction, and infrastructure. As Moisescu leads the charge in restarting production operations, he anticipates potential kick-off post-Easter, which could signify a comeback for the manufacturing sector in Romania.
