Letter to EU Parliament Urges Support for Road Transport Tech Diversity
Our website and the International Road Transport Union (IRU) have jointly penned a letter to Members of the European Parliament, urging support for preserving crucial technology options in the road transport sector amidst the new CO standards proposal.
The letter, signed by several prominent organisations, outlines five key recommendations to ensure technology diversity and efficient decarbonisation. It calls for the inclusion of new vehicle groups in heavy-duty vehicle emission reduction targets, while exempting high-capacity vehicles. The signatories also advocate for maintaining adequate space for carbon-neutral fuels, such as biofuels and synthetic fuels, alongside electrification and hydrogen technologies. They stress that the future performance of the EU road transport sector hinges on the technology options allowed by the CO standards regulation. Furthermore, the letter proposes implementing essential enabling conditions to achieve ambitious CO targets and ensuring timely assessment of the legislation's effectiveness. It also suggests supporting regional passenger transport by reshuffling bus and coach targets.
