Leipzig/Halle Airport's expansion faces legal challenge from environmental group BUND, while Saxon Ministry of Economics pushes for infrastructure growth. Despite the lawsuit, construction continues, backed by the Saxon State Directorate.

The German Federal Association for the Environment (BUND) has taken the Saxon state to court, questioning the legality and climate impact of Leipzig/Halle Airport's expansion. The environmental group seeks to halt the project, citing concerns over noise pollution and carbon emissions.

Meanwhile, the Saxon Ministry of Economics argues for the necessity of strengthening airport infrastructure to attract more businesses and boost regional economic growth. The expansion plans aim to strike a balance between economic development and environmental protection measures.

Despite BUND's lawsuit, the Saxon State Directorate has confirmed that building rights are being exercised, and the expansion continues. The airport, central to Saxony's economic development and a key part of Central Germany's logistics hub, has received around 1.5 billion euros in investment since reunification, transforming it into a modern air cargo hub.

Critics, including environmentalists, residents, and political opposition, have slammed the expansion plans due to climate and cost concerns. The Saxon Left and Greens have demanded higher fees for DHL, a focus on sustainable aviation, a night flight ban, and increased take-off and landing fees to protect health and the environment. Currently, the airport handles an annual cargo capacity of 1.4 million tons, making it the second-largest air cargo center in the United States and fourth in Europe.

The expansion of Leipzig/Halle Airport, a vital economic engine for Saxony, faces legal hurdles from environmentalists. Despite criticism and a lawsuit, the project proceeds, backed by the state.
