Law Firm JSM Appoints First Lateral Partner after Separation from Mayer Brown
Joe Kamho Choy Joins Johnson Stokes & Master as Employment and Benefits Co-Head
Johnson Stokes & Master (JSM) has announced the appointment of Joe Kamho Choy as partner and co-head of the employment and benefits team. This marks the first partner hire at JSM since the firm's split from Mayer Brown, which was finalised in late 2024.
Joe Choy, who previously led the Asia employment, labour, and pensions team at Eversheds Sutherland, brings over a decade of experience in advising clients on employment matters. He is GBA-qualified and has conducted employment proceedings at all levels of the Hong Kong courts.
Before joining JSM, Joe Choy worked at Mayer Brown JSM for over seven years. He is an alumnus of the firm and started his legal career at Zhong Lun Law Firm.
Terence Tung, a partner at JSM, made the announcement, stating that Joe Choy's appointment is intended to augment JSM's capabilities and ensure they remain at the forefront in developing sophisticated solutions to complex issues for their clients in Hong Kong and Mainland China.
Hong Tran, employment and benefits co-head at JSM, stated that Joe Choy's appointment is significant for the team and the firm. She added that with Joe's extensive experience and expertise, they are confident that they can continue to provide top-tier legal services to their clients.
JSM now has 43 partners in Hong Kong, an increase from 42 with the addition of Joe Choy. The firm also has 119 lawyers in Hong Kong, an increase from the previous 112, with Joe Choy's inclusion.
However, the departure of some partners has also been noted since the split from Mayer Brown. Wilson Fung and Jennifer Tam, both employment experts, have exited the firm.
Joe Choy advises on occupational retirement scheme matters and is regularly involved in employment and retirement scheme issues arising from M&A transactions. His expertise is expected to significantly contribute to JSM's growth and success in the employment and benefits practice area.
Joe Kamho Choy's extensive experience in employment law and finance, gained from his career at Zhong Lun Law Firm, Eversheds Sutherland, and Mayer Brown JSM, will undoubtedly prove valuable in driving the growth and success of Johnson Stokes & Master's business. With his appointment as co-head of the employment and benefits team at JSM, he will also contribute to the development of sophisticated solutions for clients in careers related to law and finance.
