Latvia's First US Deal: KBR to Build Renewable Jet Fuel Plant in Liepaja

Latvia's trade mission to the USA has yielded its first cooperation agreement, signed in Houston. KBR, a leading energy management company based in Munich, Germany, has agreed to provide a patented engineering solution and equipment for a renewable aviation fuel plant and CO2 export terminal at the Port of Liepāja.

The project, slated for completion by 2030, is a significant step for Latvia's energy sector. Economics Minister Viktors Valainis welcomed the entry of KBR, stating that it will enable the development of a sustainable aviation fuel business. The agreement is a result of discussions in the strategic investment council about changes in regulations for SAF production, CO2 capture, hydrogen capture, and wind farm development in Latvia. KBR, based in Houston, signed a memorandum with GI Termināls, a company of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone. This will be KBR's first project in the Baltic region, utilising their patented technologies for the recycling of fossil resources such as CO2 on a wider scale than previously used.

The cooperation agreement signed in Houston marks a significant milestone for Latvia's energy sector. With KBR's expertise and technology, the Port of Liepāja is set to become a hub for sustainable aviation fuel production and CO2 export, contributing to Latvia's green energy transition.
