Latvia's €123M Green Train Project: BEMUs to Replace Diesels by 2026
Latvian Railways (LDz) is investing heavily in green mobility, with a massive €123 million project to introduce battery-electric multiple units (BEMU) trains. More than €104 million comes from the Cohesion Fund, with the rest from national funding.
The Road Transport Directorate (ATD) is overseeing the tender for these trains, which must be completed within 42 months of the procurement contract's start. Stadler, a renowned Swiss manufacturer, has been selected to deliver the BEMU trains, with an allocation of €110.7 million.
The new trains will serve routes from Rīga to Cēsis and from Rīga to Daugavpils, replacing diesel-powered ones. They are scheduled to start operation by the end of 2026. LDz will also develop charging infrastructure along these routes, with €12.3 million dedicated to this purpose.
This significant investment aligns with Europe's green goals, aiming to boost mobility while reducing emissions. The project, funded by the Cohesion Fund and national resources, demonstrates Latvia's commitment to sustainable transportation.
