Kazakhstan Plans to Strengthen Links Through Upgraded Transportation Networks in the Current Year
Kazakhstan is embarking on a significant journey to modernise its transport infrastructure, with investments exceeding 9 trillion tenge (US$17.1 billion). The nation's ambitious plans include the construction of new airports, the expansion of railways, and the development of a container store at the Aktau port.
One of the key projects is the acquisition of 225 new railcars this year, aiming to boost train traffic and improve efficiency. The Dostyk-Moiynty projects are another significant initiative. These projects, which involve the construction of new roads spanning 4,700 kilometers, will enable uninterrupted movement of up to 12-60 pairs of trains and the Almaty rail bypass. This will increase throughput capacity by five times.
The railway work under the Dostyk-Moiynty projects is not the only part of Kazakhstan's train expansion. Traffic on the Dostyk-Beskol and Moiynty-Balkhash sections will also be opened, boosting train traffic in these areas.
The Aktau port, located in the Mangystau region, is at the heart of Kazakhstan's transport infrastructure development. Work has begun on a container store at the Aktau port, with the aim of raising throughput capacity to 240,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) per year. Dredging work is also planned to expand terminal capacity and improve train shipping efficiency.
These developments at the Aktau port are expected to strengthen Kazakhstan's position in international logistics. The container store is expected to increase train traffic along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) via Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey. Some transit freight from China to Europe may be rerouted through the Aktau port due to the container store development.
Kazakhstan is not only focusing on train and port developments. The nation is also constructing new airports in Katon-Karagai National Park resort areas, Zaisan in the East Kazakhstan Region, and Kendirli in the Mangystau Region. These airports are being built with investments from Chinese and Kazakh companies.
Efforts are being made to attract investors for these transport infrastructure projects. The ultimate goal is to increase freight traffic along the TITR, or the Middle Corridor, by a significant margin. The successful implementation of these projects will undoubtedly position Kazakhstan as a major player in international logistics.
