KAWS Takes on First Artist-in-Residence Role for UNIQLO
UNIQLO, the global apparel retailer renowned for its LifeWear concept, has taken a significant stride in integrating art more deeply into its core identity. The company has appointed KAWS as its first Artist-in-Residence, a move that signals a more permanent and wide-ranging presence for the artist within the UNIQLO framework.
John C Jay, President of Global Creative at Fast Retailing (UNIQLO's parent company), stated that KAWS will help UNIQLO expand global appreciation and participation in art and creativity. This new title is part of a strategy to bridge the gap between the worlds of fashion and art, mirroring UNIQLO's efforts to redefine the apparel industry through LifeWear and KAWS' efforts to break traditional boundaries in the art world.
In his role as Artist-in-Residence, KAWS aims to curate the next generation of UNIQLO collaborators from the art community and global creatives. He will commence his residency from the Fall/Winter 2025 season.
The partnership between KAWS and UNIQLO has a consistent history, with previous joint projects including collections with Peanuts, Sesame Street, and collaborations related to a KAWS art book and the work of Andy Warhol. This long-standing relationship between the artist and the brand is a testament to their shared vision and commitment to pushing boundaries and creating unique, compelling experiences for their audiences.
With KAWS at the helm, UNIQLO is poised to further blur the lines between fashion and art, offering its customers a more immersive and engaging shopping experience that transcends traditional notions of clothing and apparel.
