Japan, Philippines Eye Grape Trade Boost as Ministers Meet
Japanese Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi visited Manila on Thursday, where he met with his Philippine counterpart, Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. The meeting focused on boosting agricultural trade, with a particular emphasis on Japanese grape exports. Koizumi's visit comes at the request of Yamanashi Governor Kotaro Nagasaki, who seeks to expand the reach of Japanese grapes. During the meeting, Laurel Jr. expressed openness to holding technical talks to facilitate Japanese grape imports. Koizumi, in turn, urged the Philippines to start importing Japanese grapes, highlighting the Shine Muscat variety. The ministers scheduled a technical meeting for October 3, 2025, to discuss the import details. The meeting between Koizumi and Laurel Jr. signals a potential increase in agricultural trade between Japan and the Philippines, with Japanese grapes set to take center stage. The upcoming technical meeting will likely pave the way for concrete import plans.
