Is Bayern Munich Considering Renewing Leroy Sane's Contract, Valued at Approximately $47 Million?
This was a protracted transfer saga spanning an entire season. In the summer of 2019, Bayern Munich intensely chased winger Leroy Sané, but Manchester City played tough and it wasn't until the following summer that Bayern successfully signed him for €49 million ($50 million).
Originally, Bayern was looking to pay over $100 million in the summer of 2019, but a cruciate ligament injury in the Community Shield victory against Liverpool led to a delay in the transfer. When it finally went through the next summer, it came at a substantial discount.
Five years later, the situation between Bayern and Sané might see the German national team winger leaving for free next summer. His contract is set to expire, and there have been no talks to renew it thus far.
The player expressed his desire to stay. In response to Bayern’s 5-1 win over RB Leipzig, he told Sky Germany, "Max Eberl spoke about that, and I also gave my opinion. Things are going well, and we'll see. I just want to perform now and help us win our games." Does he want to stay at Bayern? "Yes!"
Bayern director of sport Eberl was more reserved when discussing Sané's statements. "Then we'll talk in January," Eberl said.
January will be a busy month for Eberl. He's currently negotiating contracts with Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, and Alphonso Davies. And Sané? Negotiations with Sané aren't necessarily a priority for Eberl.
According to Kicker's Monday report, Bayern will not renew the contract with the 28-year-old. Sané is reportedly willing to compromise on his salary to remain in Munich, acknowledging his comfort in the Bavarian capital.
Even so, a deal appears challenging. According to Capology, Sané is earning €20 million ($21 million) a season at Bayern. Bayern would like to allocate some, if not all, of this to Musiala, Davies, and new players like Nico Williams.
The general consensus among Bayern's management is that it might be best for everyone to move on. Sané never fully realized his potential in Munich, either due to injuries or personal reasons.
Transfermarkt's assessment of Sané's market value supports this notion. When he joined Bayern, his value was €70 million ($73 million). It briefly reached €80 million ($83 million) in December 2023 when he formed a strong partnership with Harry Kane.
Sané's time at Bayern seemed salvageable at that point, as he performed exceptionally well under Thomas Tuchel. However, another injury and Bayern's second-half slump saw his value decrease.
Sané was barely noticeable for Germany during the European Championships last summer and struggled at the start of the season. This year, his market value has fallen to €45 million ($47 million).
Considering all this, it seems logical why Bayern is leaning towards letting the player go, even if Sané is willing to accept a lower salary. Bayern aims to restructure the attack and needs the squad position for younger talent. As a 28-year-old, there's still plenty of football left for Sané, and a fresh start elsewhere could rejuvenate his career.
Bayern Munich's struggles to renew Leroy Sane's contract continue, despite his expressed desire to stay. As reported by Kicker, Bayern is not planning to renew the deal with the winger, who is open to compromising on his salary to remain in Munich.
Despite Sane's wanting to stay, Bayern's director of sport, Eberl, has indicated that negotiations with Sane are not a priority at the moment. This situation contrasts with the intense pursuit of Sane in the summer of 2019, when Bayern managed to sign him for €49 million ($50 million) after a protracted transfer saga.
