Investigation Initiated: Water Transportation Study by MassDOT and MBTA to explore feasibility of new ferry service
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) have joined forces to launch the Water Transportation Study. This comprehensive initiative, focusing on regional ferry service development along the Massachusetts coast, is set to last for a year.
The study aims to explore improvements to existing MBTA ferry routes and infrastructure, as well as identify multimodal access upgrades to current and potential ferry terminal locations. This ambitious project seeks to enhance the water transportation experience for customers, strengthening ties between communities, reducing congestion, and supporting sustainable travel.
MassDOT Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt emphasised the importance of ferries as vital connections that foster community ties and promote eco-friendly travel.
To ensure community involvement and shape the study's direction, public engagement sessions will be held. These sessions will include virtual and in-person meetings, workshops, pop-up events, and stakeholder meetings. The public engagement sessions for the Water Transportation Study in September will take place online on the 24th, from 18:30 to 21:00.
The study website, accessible on MassDOT's website, serves as a central hub for accessing project documents and submitting feedback. The public can view meeting materials and submit comments through this website. A feedback form is available for this purpose.
The public will have multiple opportunities to engage with the Water Transportation Study through various engagement sessions. The study will investigate additional terminal locations and routes, and it will be shaped by community voices and ideas.
Residents, local leaders, and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in these sessions and share their thoughts. The study's website is an essential resource for staying informed about the study's progress and engagement opportunities.
By engaging with the public, the Water Transportation Study aims to create a more efficient, accessible, and enjoyable ferry service for all.
