New Tank 500 PHEV SUVs Offer Power, Luxury, and Advanced Tech

Great Wall Motors (GWM) has expanded its Tank 500 SUV lineup with the introduction of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models. The Hi4-T and Hi4-Z trims, now available, offer a blend of powerful electric ranges, off-road capabilities, and modern luxury technology.

The Hi4-T version features a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine (185 kW / 248 hp) paired with an electric motor (120 kW / 161 hp), resulting in a combined output of around 300 kW. This setup offers a pure electric range of approximately 110 km using a 36.7 or 37.1 kWh lithium battery. The Hi4-T comes equipped with advanced off-road capabilities, including all-wheel drive with three mechanical differential locks, ensuring superior traction.

The Hi4-Z variant takes things up a notch, using the same 2.0T engine but pairing it with dual electric motors generating a combined power output of 455 kW (610 hp). Equipped with a 3-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) and a larger 59.05 kWh battery, the Hi4-Z offers a longer pure electric range of around 201 km. This premium option within the Tank 500 PHEV lineup boasts high-level autonomous capabilities, thanks to an ATX LiDAR sensor, multiple radars, cameras, and Nvidia Orin-X smart driving chip.

In addition to the powertrains, these updated models come with numerous upgrades. Advanced driver assistance systems, ventilated, heated, and massage seats, a 17.3-inch ceiling touchscreen for rear passengers, an embedded refrigerator in the center console, and multi-mode control interfaces are just a few of the enhancements. The Tank 500 retains its strong off-road capabilities, with good ground clearance, approach/departure angles, and a 2,500 kg towing capacity.

The Tank 500 PHEV models are set to begin pre-sale in China on August 11, joining the Tank 300 as part of the Tank lineup. The Chinese brand, which is a sub-brand under Great Wall Motors, focuses on big 'manly' SUVs with off-road capabilities, as evidenced by the Tank 500's high-end materials, leather seats, wood trim, and Tank-branded analog clock. The engine is paired with a 9-speed automated manual transmission, and the Tank 500 offers 2H, 4H, and 4L modes. A central differential lock and rear differential lock are standard features.

The Tank 500 is equipped with a Miller cycle 3.0 V6 turbocharged engine, a minimum ground clearance of 224mm, and a wading depth of 800mm. It also includes a rear view camera 'mirror', flappy pedals, and sends power to all four wheels. The Tank 500 Sport will be available for pre-sale in China on August 11.
