Aircraft Accident in Russia: Facts Revealed - information Remaining Unknown - Insights Gained - Unresolved Questions

In a devastating turn of events, Angara Airlines Flight 2311, an Antonov An-24RV aircraft, crashed during its final approach to Tynda Airport in Russia's Amur Oblast on July 24, 2025. The plane, carrying 42 passengers and 6 crew members, including 5 children and several Russian Railways employees, tragically claimed all lives on board.

The aircraft, a 1976-built Antonov An-24RV with registration RA-47315, had previously served under Aeroflot before the Soviet Union's dissolution. At the time of the crash, Angara Airlines operated 10 Antonov An-24s, all built between 1972 and 1976. The crashed plane had been involved in four incidents since 2018 but had recently passed a technical inspection and had a valid airworthiness certificate until 2036.

The crash occurred under poor weather conditions, with low clouds and driving rain, during the plane's second approach to Tynda Airport. The plane crashed about 16 kilometers from the airport into a forested area, making the rescue operation particularly challenging due to the difficult terrain with bogs and taiga.

Investigations are ongoing, but early reports suggest that the visibility and weather conditions were key factors contributing to the crash. However, no official cause has been confirmed yet. It remains unclear if there were any specific technical defects with the plane that may have caused or contributed to the crash.

In a related development, the Russian prosecutor's office has launched a criminal case against the operating airline, Angara, for suspected violations of safety regulations. The crew had not reported any technical problems beforehand, and the plane was reportedly inspected immediately before takeoff, with no safety issues found.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety regulations in the aviation industry. In Russia, concerns about corruption and superficial inspections leading to serious accidents have been raised in the past.

Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident.
