Industry Shift Towards Gas and Hydrogen: A Clear Indicator of Energy Sector Transformation

Rebranded Gas and Hydrogen Association Readies for a Green Future

Hear ye, hear ye! The Gas and Hydrogen Industry, formerly known as Future Gas, is giving itself a makeover. At a spirited meeting, its members unanimously agreed to the rebranding, sending a bold message: the gas industry is embracing the challenge of the energy transition, shifting its focus towards a forward-thinking sector that harmonizes supply security, economic efficiency, and climate protection.

"That's right!" cheerfully exclaims Dr. Timm Kehler, the association's CEO. "With this rebrand, we're sending a crystal-clear signal: the gas industry is tackling the energy transition head-on and establishing itself as a future-focused sector." The new moniker, he adds, underscores the industry's steady progression towards hydrogen as the lead energy carrier of tomorrow.

This rebranding strategy couldn't come at a better time. Amidst the growing importance of hydrogen in Germany and Europe as a key technology for a sustainable energy supply, the federal election is on the horizon. The Gas and Hydrogen Industry Association is seizing this opportunity to advocate for clear measures.

According to Kehler, the secrets to quickening the ramp-up of hydrogen and biomethane are an unwavering and clear market framework and a green gas quotas. The emphasis, he stresses, should rest on the measurable CO2 reduction potential of the initiatives.

Compared to the phasing out of fossil fuels, the distribution network mustn't be overlooked. The association reiterates the essential role of infrastructure—from strengthening the hydrogen backbone network to ensuring ample storage capacities—and the continued importance of the distribution network for the approximately 1.8 million businesses reliant on a secure, dependable, and cost-effective energy supply.

"But that's not all," says Kehler, "a successful transformation of the networks is vital for a reliable and resilient power generation as well."

As Germany moves toward a climate-neutral energy supply, the Gas and Hydrogen Industry Association advocates for a range of measures and infrastructure developments, including expanding hydrogen-ready gas-fired power plants, accelerating hydrogen infrastructure development, and streamlining approval processes and investments.

According to recent coalition policies and industry lobbying, the association also emphasizes the importance of energy reliability and affordability, the flexibility and dispatchability of large-scale gas and hydrogen infrastructure, and technology-neutral approaches.

| Measure/Development | Objective | Policy/Industry Position ||------------------------------|----------------------------------------|--------------------------|| Hydrogen-ready gas plants | Grid stability, backup for renewables | 20 GW by 2030, CCS possible || Hydrogen infrastructure | Enable hydrogen economy, store excess renewables | Faster permitting, targeted investment || Investment & regulatory reform| Speed up clean energy transition | Streamlined approvals, more funding || Sector coupling & transport incentives | Decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors, boost EVs | Tax write-offs, tech-neutral approach |

  1. "As Germany moves toward a climate-neutral energy supply, the Gas and Hydrogen Industry Association advocates for the expansion of hydrogen-ready gas-fired power plants, aiming to achieve a capacity of 20 GW by 2030, with the potential for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)."
  2. "The Association is also pushing for accelerated development of hydrogen infrastructure, enabling the storage of excess renewable energy and facilitating the growth of a hydrogen economy."
  3. "To speed up the clean energy transition, the association emphasizes the need for streamlined approvals and increased funding for investments, ensuring a smoother path for reforms in the sector."
  4. "In terms of sector coupling and transport incentives, the Association seeks to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors and boost the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) through tax write-offs and technology-neutral approaches."
