India's Union Budget 2021-22 Prioritizes Green Recovery and Sustainability
The Union Budget 2021-22 has been unveiled, with a strong focus on environmental sustainability and green recovery post the Covid-19 pandemic. The Budget, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, outlines a long-term vision for this decade, prioritising various green initiatives.
One of the key highlights is the 'Health and Wellness' pillar, which integrates air pollution management, waste control, and potable water supply. This is part of a five-year plan aimed at creating a cleaner, healthier India.
The Budget also launches the Deep Ocean Mission, with a budget of Rs 4,000 crores over five years. This mission aims to explore ocean depths and conserve marine biodiversity. The Budget also prioritises renewable energy, with an investment of Rs 2,500 crores in solar and other renewable energy sources. Furthermore, a national hydrogen mission is to be launched in 2021-22, focusing on generating hydrogen from green power sources.
In a significant move, the Budget earmarks Rs 50,000 crores over five years to strengthen the research ecosystem in health and technology innovation. This is a substantial boost to India's scientific and technological capabilities.
