Saxony-Anhalt Sees Modest Growth in Electric Vehicle Adoption

Saxony-Anhalt, a German state, witnessed a rise in the number of registered electric vehicles, albeit at a comparatively modest level. According to the State's Statistical Office, 1.6% of all registered passenger cars in the region, amounting to 19,343, were electric as of January 1, 2025. This represented a growth of 17.9% over the previous year, with an additional 2,941 electric vehicles joining the roads.

The grand total of registered motor vehicles in Saxony-Anhalt stood at 1,521,611 by that date, marking a 5.1% increase from the previous year. The majority of cars continue to rely on gasoline, with approximately 797,000 gasoline-powered vehicles in use, while diesel engines accounted for 329,000.

Female drivers represent a slightly higher proportion of car registrations, accounting for 37.7% of the total, compared to only 11.8% of motorcycle buyers being women.

While specific data on the rate of growth of electric vehicles in relation to traditional ones (gasoline and diesel) from 2024 to 2025 for Saxony-Anhalt remains limited, broader trends in Germany provide some context. As of the end of 2024, over 1.65 million all-electric vehicles were registered nationwide, signifying a burgeoning demand for electric vehicles. Across Germany, the share of privately-owned electric cars stands at around 3%, and some regions like Bavaria, Lower Saxony, and Baden-Württemberg boast higher concentrations of electric vehicles. In contrast, states such as Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt exhibit lower shares of electric vehicles.

Moreover, the trend towards used electric vehicles has surfaced, as evidenced by the first quarter of 2025 when 61% of private individuals preferred used electric vehicles over new ones, seemingly a response to the withdrawal of government incentives. Meanwhile, the German automotive industry reported a decrease in foreign market revenue for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in 2024 compared to the previous year. These broader trends underscore ongoing but relatively sluggish adoption rates of electric vehicles, particularly new ones, and a robust market for used electric vehicles across Germany. Gasoline and diesel vehicles still prevail in regions with lower electric vehicle penetration.

  1. To promote the growth of electric vehicles in Saxony-Anhalt, the community could consider implementing a policy focusing on vocational training for technicians specializing in electric vehicles, thoughtfully considering the impact on industry, finance, transportation, and technology.
  2. As the number of electric vehicles grows, vocational training programs could be expanded to include not only vehicle maintenance but also finance and insurance courses, helping drivers finance their electric vehicles and navigate transportation costs more effectively.
