Strengthening Tables Across the Nation Requires Additional Funding - Increased financial requirements

Saxony-Anhalt food banks are adapting to a new approach in their operations, focusing on obtaining incorrectly labeled or damaged food from national food producers instead of relying on locally collected unsold food. This change, however, comes with its own set of challenges, particularly in terms of logistics and funding.

According to Kai Gerrit Bädje, chairman of the Saxony-Anhalt food bank, this is a new approach for food banks. He states that more funding is needed for the food banks due to increased logistics and transportation costs. The goods, which predominantly come from food producers located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, and Bavaria, need to be distributed quickly due to best before dates. Logistics need to be adjusted to transport food from the south to the north, a challenge that requires professional transport companies, which costs money.

Thomas Lippmann, deputy parliamentary group leader of the Left party, echoes these sentiments, stating that food banks are under financial pressure due to increased operating costs and need a significant increase in state funding. The Left party's parliamentary group claims that the current state funding of 40,000 euros per year for Saxony-Anhalt food banks is insufficient.

The state government, in response, has stated that it plans to provide 40,000 euros per year for the years 2024 to 2026. However, Kai Gerrit Bädje states that 250,000 euros per year would be good for the food banks. The state association applied for funding for the first time in 2022 and received around 30,000 euros. In 2023, there was a subsidy for the purchase of a truck, according to the state government's response.

Eva von Angern, parliamentary group leader, has asked the state government about funding and received this information. Despite these efforts, the exact additional annual funding needed by Saxony-Anhalt food banks to sustain their operations and cover increased costs remains unclear.

This new approach, while promising in reducing food waste, presents a financial challenge for the food banks. As they navigate these rising costs, it is crucial to find solutions that ensure the continuity of their vital work in providing food to those in need.

For more detailed data on the additional annual funding needs of Saxony-Anhalt food banks, one would typically consult local government or municipal social services financial reports, charitable organizations or umbrella associations like the German Tafel e.V., or regional NGOs operating food banks, which may publish annual funding gaps.

  1. The Saxony-Anhalt food banks, in their transition to obtaining incorrectly labeled or damaged food from national producers, are facing an increased need for employment policy, particularly in logistics and transportation sectors, to manage the distribution of time-sensitive goods.
  2. The financial strain on Saxony-Anhalt food banks, due to the escalating costs associated with their new approach, necessitates a review and potentially an adjustment of the community policy regarding state funding for food banks, to ensure their sustainable operation and continuation of providing food-and-drink items to those in need.
