In a move that has raised concerns among federal states, Central Bohemia has approved a significant increase in the cost of regional public transport tickets, effective from January 1, 2026. The plan, which involves a 30% hike in the price of paper tickets and a 20% increase for electronic tickets, aims to maintain the sustainability of the Prague Integrated Transport (PID) network in the face of rising costs.

The proposed changes project a 13% increase in transport spending, amounting to CZK 5.2 billion in 2026. However, the plan is not without complications. A disagreement between the Central Bohemia administration and Prague's city leaders over the extent of the price hikes could lead to a "tariff split," making cross-border travel between Prague and the region more expensive and complex.

This disagreement threatens the coordination of the shared ticketing system, as Prague's agreement is necessary for the price hikes to take effect seamlessly. If the disagreement persists, passengers may need to buy two separate tickets for trips crossing the city-region border, adding to the complexity and cost of regional travel.

As of August 2025, no federal-level or cross-state solutions have been finalized to prevent or offset these increases. The federal states have expressed their concerns, but progress towards a unified or mitigated approach remains unresolved.

The affordability of the regional ticket is crucial for encouraging citizens to use trains instead of cars and facilitating the reduction of car usage. The current financial situation is a challenge for maintaining the ticket's affordability, with the states already struggling with significant expenses and in need of federal support.

The regional ticket's projected cost for 2026 is approximately 3.8 billion euros. A standard tariff is proposed for the regional ticket's area, but the affordability of the ticket remains a key issue that requires political compromise and coordinated planning between the city of Prague and the surrounding region.

The federal government's announcement gives little hope for maintaining stable prices for the regional ticket in the near future. The states have called on the federal government to cover the additional costs, but as of now, no definitive solution has been proposed to address the projected increase in the regional ticket's cost.

The increase in the regional ticket's cost will significantly burden the federal states' budgets, and there is hope that all federal states will work together towards finding a solution. The current uncertain financial situation is causing the projected increase in the regional ticket's cost, and past discussions have had a negative impact on the continuation of the regional ticket and the mobile transformation in the country.

It is possible that the regional ticket's price will increase again, but only by the inflation rate of public transport. However, this is not enough to alleviate the financial pressures faced by the federal states. The goal is to maintain the regional ticket as an affordable basic ticket for long-term security, but the current situation remains in flux, with attention needed to avoid penalizing commuters with fragmented or doubled ticket costs.
