In the heart of Germany, the Central German Transport Association (MDV) region, which includes cities such as Leipzig and Halle, has seen an increase in public transportation ticket prices effective from August 1, 2025.

The price adjustments, averaging between 5 to 6 percent, have affected various ticket categories. For instance, single tickets in Leipzig will now cost €3.60, up from €3.50, while in Halle, the price has risen from €3.00 to €3.40.

Two-zone tickets will now cost €4.80 instead of €4.50, and three-zone tickets have increased from €6.20 to €6.60. A four-hour ticket valid across the entire network will now cost €14.20, up from €13.40.

These changes are attributed to higher operating costs, wage increases, and the impact of the low-cost Deutschlandticket, which although it boosts passenger numbers, does not proportionately increase revenues for transport providers.

The Deutschlandticket subscription price, allowing unlimited travel on regional and local public transport, is also set to increase from €49 to €58 per month starting in 2025.

The MDV network affected by these changes includes not only the cities of Leipzig and Halle, but also surrounding districts, as well as local rail transport in parts of Saxony-Anhalt such as Wittenberg, Anhalt-Bitterfeld, and Dessau-Roßlau.

A video related to this topic is available from MIDDLE GERMAN BROADCASTING. The time of the video's publication is not provided, but the summary of the fare increases was published on August 1, 2025, at 19:00 hours. The duration of the video is not specified. The link to access the video can be found on SACHSEN-ANHALT TODAY, a website where a one-hour and thirty-minute summary of the fare increases can also be found.

Many train passengers have expressed their displeasure with the latest increase, signifying a potential challenge for the transport providers in the region.

  1. The price hike in public transportation tickets, affecting various categories within the Central German Transport Association (MDV) region, may impact the overall financial health of the industry, especially as it faces higher operating costs, wage increases, and the impact of the low-cost Deutschlandticket.
  2. In light of the increase in prices for public transportation tickets across the MDV network, including Leipzig, Halle, and other surrounding districts, as well as local rail transport in parts of Saxony-Anhalt like Wittenberg, Anhalt-Bitterfeld, and Dessau-Roßlau, the finance sector may need to closely monitor the effects on the transport industry.
