In the first half of 2025, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) managed to recover a staggering sum of 547 billion Pakistani rupees.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of Pakistan has made record-breaking recoveries, totalling Rs547 billion (approximately $1.6 billion) in the first half of 2025. This impressive figure marks a significant increase in recoveries compared to previous years.
According to the NAB's mid-year performance report for 2025, the bureau has intensified its efforts to combat corruption and protect public interests. The report reaffirms NAB's commitment to safeguarding public resources and combating corruption nationwide.
In the second quarter of 2025 alone, NAB recovered an astounding Rs456.3 billion, nearly five times the amount recovered in the first quarter. This substantial increase demonstrates intensified enforcement and more effective asset tracing and recovery efforts by NAB.
Over the past two years, NAB has recovered a total of Rs5.85 trillion worth of movable and immovable properties. This figure exceeds recoveries since its inception by about 700%. Of the Rs547 billion recovered in the first half of 2025, approximately Rs532 billion in movable and immovable properties have been returned to federal and provincial ministries, government departments, financial institutions, and public entities.
In addition to recovering misappropriated assets, NAB has also been working to compensate victims of fraud. Over 12,600 individuals affected by corruption and fraud have been compensated by NAB.
NAB is actively coordinating with the Revenue Departments of all provinces to identify and reclaim state assets, particularly state land unlawfully held by corrupt individuals. Preliminary estimates suggest approximately Rs5 trillion worth of state land is currently under illegal possession and is targeted for recovery.
The NAB's recovery efforts have been focused on state assets and properties unlawfully held by corrupt elements. For example, NAB Rawalpindi recently recovered 51 kanal of land valued at Rs29 billion in Islamabad’s Sector E-11 and handed it over to the Capital Development Authority (CDA).
The NAB's total recoveries for the first half of 2025 have been disbursed to various ministries, departments, financial institutions, and provinces. The mid-year performance report highlights NAB's intensified efforts to recover misappropriated funds and return them to their rightful owners.
In conclusion, the NAB's strategy combines vigorous anti-corruption investigations with strong legal and administrative coordination to ensure misappropriated assets are identified, recovered, and restored to government ownership, alongside compensating defrauded individuals. The bureau's record-breaking recoveries in 2025 underscore its commitment to combating corruption and safeguarding public resources.
