Improves Accessibility of Transportation Applications by TfGM

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has partnered with Via Transportation to modernize its Ring & Ride and Local Link services, aiming to deliver a truly bespoke, modern, and flexible experience for customers.

Ring & Ride, an accessible and low-cost transport service for disabled people and older people with walking difficulties, and Local Link, a flexible minibus service for local journeys in parts of the city-region where public transport services are limited, are considered vital for providing access to low-cost, accessible, and flexible journeys by public transport.

TfGM is working hard to deliver more improvements for its passengers, particularly focusing on door-to-door services that are a lifeline for many people in hard-to-reach areas. The partnership with Via is expected to bring innovative technology and solutions to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Ring & Ride and Local Link services.

The modernized services are intended to enhance the mobility options for disabled people, older people, and those with limited access to public transport. TfGM has invested significantly in modernizing its public transport system to improve accessibility, including installing audiovisual announcements, hearing loops, and wheelchair bays on new Bee Network buses.

The primary users of these services are older people, disabled people, and those not well-connected to other transport routes. TfGM's deputy director of bus, Alison Chew, has stated that the Bee Network is committed to making public transport and active travel more inclusive and accessible for everyone in Greater Manchester.

The upgraded transport services, launched on February 26, are expected to serve over 850 passengers daily. The partnership between TfGM and Via marks a significant step towards modernizing transport services in Greater Manchester and aligns with Greater Manchester's efforts to improve accessibility and flexibility in local transport.

The fourth annual CiTTi Awards will recognize and celebrate achievements and innovations in public transport on November 25, 2025, at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. This unmissable event for the UK's transportation sector will undoubtedly highlight the progress made by TfGM and Via in modernizing public transport services in Greater Manchester.
