GM and Hyundai Partner to Develop Electric Commercial Van for North America

General Motors (GM) and Hyundai have announced a partnership to co-develop five new vehicles, including an electric commercial van specifically for the North American market. The electric van, which will be led by Hyundai in its development, is set to be assembled in the U.S. as early as 2028.

The electric van is envisioned as a smaller sibling to GM’s existing BrightDrop vans but will be a distinct, newly designed vehicle. This van targets the growing demand for battery-electric delivery vehicles in North America’s commercial sector.

The collaboration reflects a strategic effort by both automakers to bring more efficient, electrified commercial vehicles to market and leverage their combined expertise in manufacturing and innovation.

The partnership also includes co-development of four additional vehicles aimed at Central and South American markets—compact SUV, car, compact pickup, and mid-size pickup trucks—with options for internal combustion or hybrid powertrains. Together, the five vehicles are expected to reach sales exceeding 800,000 units annually once production is scaled.

GM will focus on the mid-size truck platform as part of their broader collaboration, while Hyundai will lead the development of the electric van. Each vehicle will feature distinct branding on the interiors and exteriors, but will share common platforms.

Hyundai aims to break through in the North American market with alternative-powertrain vehicles, and the electric commercial van will mark a rare entry for the company into the North American commercial-vehicles market.

The first co-developed vehicles will demonstrate how GM and Hyundai will leverage their complementary strengths and combined scale. The vehicles for Latin American markets are scheduled to launch in 2028.

In addition, GM has started allowing Chevrolet brand dealers to sell the BrightDrop van to expand its reach and improve service access for owners needing repairs or tools.

The partnership between GM and Hyundai includes new-energy projects, joint investments, and collaborations in various areas such as vehicles, production, powertrain, platforms, battery and hydrogen-powered mobility, and distribution. The companies expect the collaboration to provide customers with more efficiently produced vehicles that are beautifully designed, high-quality, safety-focused, and equipped with technology they appreciate.
