Holiday Retail Hiring to Hit 16-Year Low in 2025

Retail hiring during the upcoming holiday season in 2025 is projected to reach its lowest point since 2009, with fewer than 500,000 positions expected to be added. This comes amidst challenges such as tariffs, inflation, and increased reliance on automation and permanent staff. Some retailers have started announcing holiday initiatives but have remained silent on hiring goals.

The retail industry is facing new macroeconomic pressures, including the impact of changing global trade policies on costs. This year's projected hiring is a significant decrease from 2024, when 543,100 jobs were added in the Q4 period. In 2009, during the U.S. economic recovery, the industry hired just 495,800 seasonal employees. Some retailers like Bath & Body Works and Target have made hiring-related announcements recently, but Target did not provide a specific number. Target is focusing on offering more hours to existing employees rather than hiring a large number of seasonal workers.

The retail industry is expected to add fewer seasonal jobs than usual this holiday season, reflecting the challenges and pressures it faces. However, some retailers are still hiring, and the exact numbers may become clearer as the season approaches.
