Renewal Works on S6 Line Between Düsseldorf and Essen Set to Complete Ahead of Schedule
The Deutsche Bahn (DB) has announced that it plans to complete the repair work on the S6 line between Düsseldorf and Essen by early December, almost seven months ahead of the originally scheduled date. The repair work, which is being undertaken to address the damage caused by a landslide at Ratingen-Hösel, will also include numerous renovation measures.
The closure of the S6 line due to the landslide will be utilized to carry out these renovations. The rest of the line will be shut down from Derendorf S-Bahn station, and replacement buses will run during this period.
The landslide caused tracks to shift, damaged an overhead line mast, switches, cables, and the track drainage system. Repair measures are necessary on a length of around 650 meters. The slope will first be secured, with a wall of bored piles installed in the lower area that will be submerged 10 meters deep into the earth. The upper break edge will be secured with a wall of gabions. Once these tasks are complete, the entire track layout and the overhead line mast will be renewed.
The initial renovation work includes the new drainage system for the affected section at Hösel. Previously, regulations for this drainage were not in place, causing unpleasant delays in the renovation process. A further collection facility had to be built to control water from the track into the Oberweger Bach.
The DB has stated that the required permit for this water issue has now been granted, and construction is expected to begin at the end of June. The permit was approved faster than expected, taking only three to four months instead of one and a half years.
The closure of the S6 line from Derendorf S-Bahn station will commence on Sunday, June 29, at 11:15 PM, and trains are set to resume running on Monday, December 1, at 3:15 AM. Replacement buses will run between Essen Hbf and Unterrath S during the closure, with connections to S-Bahn lines S1 and S11.
In addition to the repair work and renovations, DB InfraGO also plans to strengthen the track between Düsseldorf-Derendorf and Essen, renewing 15 kilometers of track, two railway crossings at Kattenturm in Essen-Kettwig and at Ruhrtalstraße by Wolfsbach in Essen-Werden, and installing six new switches, 50 cable shafts, and preparing for 33 new signals. Around 80 kilometers of cable will also be laid for the planned digital control center in Essen.
The railway authorities are confident that the track will be ready for use again by December, with the schedule being coordinated with the construction companies. Passengers will be informed about the closure via displays, announcements, and online channels.
The renewal works, encompassing the industry of transportation, extend beyond the repair of the S6 line, also including finances as they require the installation of 6 new switches, 50 cable shafts, and preparations for 33 new signals, as well as the laying of approximately 80 kilometers of cable for the digital control center in Essen. The closure of the S6 line will not only enable these extensive renovations but also facilitate the upgrade of the track, incorporating the strengthening of tracks between Düsseldorf-Derendorf and Essen, and the replacement of around 15 kilometers of track.
