Insurance Giant Hanse Merkur Cranks Up Private Health Premiums
Got some bad news if you're a Hanse Merkur private health insurance customer: your premiums are going up! This Hamburg-based insurer announced an overall increase of 5.7% in health insurance premiums, effective as of New Year. According to Hanse Merkur, industry association figures show that overall increases were roughly double that amount in the market.
Why the price hike? Higher medication and treatment costs—no surprise there!—and increased doctor visits are causing Hanse Merkur some serious financial headaches.
But don't be too hard on 'em; their premium income is still climbing, with a whopping 9.7% increase to 2.95 billion euros compared to last year. That accelerated growth may be due in part to the 13,200 new fully insured customers they've welcomed on board, bringing their total customer count up to nearly 314,000.
Sadly, the company's annual surplus took a hit, falling 10.2% to 120.9 million euros, but they remained tight-lipped as to why.
As a first-line insurer, Hanse Merkur deals directly with end customers, and their main division is health insurance. They're the 11th-largest private insurer in Deutschland, ranking high amongst the 2,600 employees they employ.

Hanse Merkur isn't alone in facing these challenges—an aging population with its increased demand for healthcare services, the growing prevalence of chronic illnesses, and broader market dynamics are all impacting premiums across the industry. Even COVID-19, while complex in its direct effects, has contributed to increased claims and operational challenges within the health insurance sector.
