Stubborn as a Mule: Knauf Continues Gypsum Mine Plans in Spite of Citizen Votes
Gypsum mine's fate undecided by Knauf following public ballot - Gypsum mine remains under Knauf's control following local citizen's decision
Tensions are running high in Altertheim, a quaint town near Würzburg, as building materials giant Knauf presses on with plans to build a new gypsum mine, despite two successful citizen votes against the project. "Our mining project's approval requirements remain in place. The legal situation remains unaltered by the citizen votes," a spokesperson for Knauf stated defiantly.
Altertheim residents have long voiced their disapproval, citing potential environmental hazards and fears of the mine impacting the town's water supply. But the decision on the mine isn't entirely in their hands. The competent mining authority, not the town's votes, wields the final decision. Evidently, relevant to their judgement are expert opinions, legal requirements, and a regulated procedure that has involved the municipality and all relevant authorities from the get-go.
Starting around 2027, the company, based in Iphofen (district of Kitzingen), aims to start operations for the mine located in the Altertheimer Mulde, an area known to provide water for Würzburg among others. An estimated 100 million tons of gypsum could be extracted, with around 48 million tons being mineable.
Reigning supreme over 7.1 square kilometers, area conservationists and other concerned parties worry that such an operation could pose a significant threat to the local ecosystem. "This move serves as a rallying call to politics and authorities to prioritize water protection unwaveringly. Economic interests should not overshadow this critical issue," Andrea Angenvoort-Baier, chairwoman of the Würzburg district group of Bund Naturschutz, exclaimed.
Officials from the North Bavaria Mining Authority are expected to make a decision this fall, with hundreds of objections to the mine received. But the initiative to derail the project via legal means or thwarting Knauf's attempts to buy municipal properties has been successful in town-wide votes. Altertheim is currently contemplating the potential legal repercussions of the citizen votes.
