Government's assertion disputed by Home Builders Federation: they claim to not have achieved the stated goal regarding their website performance.

The Home Builder's Federation (HBF) has raised concerns about the accuracy of the government's estimate of net additional dwellings. According to the HBF, the figures are overinflated.

The government's calculations are based on building permit statistics and official construction data collected by statistical offices. These data are gathered from reports submitted by local building authorities and construction companies, and are aggregated at the federal level for official statistical analysis.

However, David O'Leary, the Executive Director of the HBF, has labeled the data as retrospective, stating that it only reflects a historic snapshot and does not provide a clear picture of the current industry and market conditions. He added that the figures lack granularity, failing to distinguish between flats and houses, their tenure, or the type of developer responsible.

Mr. O'Ley also criticized the government for continuing to publish these inaccurate numbers, despite being aware of their flaws. He pointed out that the dataset's history dates back to the Second World War.

As it stands, it remains unclear exactly how many new houses were built under the Conservatives since 2019, as the latest figures have yet to be produced. The HBF's criticisms have sparked a debate about the reliability of the government's housing data and its impact on policy-making and industry forecasting.
