GM & Honda's FCSM Kicks Off Mass Fuel Cell Production
FCSM, a joint venture between GM and Honda, has initiated large-scale production of fuel cell systems, led by President Mike Anderson. This is a substantial step towards the hydrogen era, with the companies doubling the lifespan of fuel cell systems and reducing manufacturing costs by a third.
FCSM, established in Brownstown, Michigan, in 2017 with a joint investment of $85 million, has already created 80 jobs. The 70,000-square-foot facilities incorporate numerous automated methods for producing membrane electrode assemblies and fuel cell assembly.
The collaboration between GM and Honda has been seamless, with both companies integrating their engineering teams and relevant intellectual property into FCSM. The result? Fuel cell systems with double the durability of the 2019 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. Moreover, the new systems will be one-third less expensive to manufacture. GM and Honda plan to utilize these world-class hydrogen energy solutions across various product applications and commercial projects.
With the success of FCSM, the onset of the hydrogen era is anticipated. The joint venture between GM and Honda has not only started volume production of fuel cell systems but also doubled their lifespan and reduced manufacturing costs. This is a significant milestone in the transition to cleaner energy sources.
