In a significant move towards diversity and inclusivity, a leading global law firm has announced the promotion of 54 lawyers to partner and director positions across 11 practice areas worldwide, effective January 1, 2022. This announcement marks a significant step in the firm's ongoing commitment to gender diversity and promoting women in senior roles.

The promotions span various practice areas, with 18 lawyers joining the litigation and disputes practice, 10 in corporate, M&A, and securities, 9 in banking and finance, 4 in intellectual property, 3 each in employment and labor, tax, real estate, projects, antitrust and competition, bankruptcy, financial restructuring, and insolvency, and 1 in information governance, privacy, and cybersecurity.

Notable promotions include Bernd Dreier and Rachel Chan, who were promoted in the corporate, M&A, and securities practice area, based in Munich and Hong Kong, respectively. Eric Green was promoted in the intellectual property practice area, based in Austin, while Rebecca Abou-Chedid was promoted in the projects practice area, based in Washington, D.C. Rafe Schaefer and Geraldine Young were promoted in the litigation and disputes practice area, based in Houston and Houston, respectively.

In a marked show of gender diversity, 23 of the promoted lawyers are women, making up 43 percent of the total promotions. This is a testament to the firm's ongoing gender diversity target of 40 percent women in its overall partnership, leadership roles, lawyer promotions, lateral additions, and senior business services hires.

Some of the notable women promotions include Marianne McMahon, who was promoted as general counsel, based in London, and Annabelle Wheeler, who was promoted in the litigation and disputes practice area, based in Munich and London. Other women promoted include Helen Fairhead, Fiona Henderson, Louisa Roe, Laura Kiwelu, Rebecca Winthrop, Zayba Drabu, Kimberly Cheeseman, and Kate Green, among others.

The firm's commitment to gender diversity is evident in the various initiatives it has undertaken. These include focusing on transparency and accountability, investing in employee networks and mentoring programs, recognizing women leaders, and embracing pledges and targets to increase gender diversity in senior roles.

Gerry Pecht, the Global Chief Executive of the law firm, congratulated the promoted lawyers and praised their industry knowledge, business acumen, and innovative solutions. He reiterated the firm's commitment to diversity and inclusivity, stating that it is crucial for the firm's success and the legal sector as a whole.

The promotions come at a time when global law firms are grappling with persistent gender diversity challenges in partner promotions. Despite stronger entry-level representation, women are still significantly underrepresented in senior roles. However, the firm's recent promotions demonstrate a positive step towards addressing this issue.

The promotions in South Africa see lawyers being promoted to director instead of partner.
