GFL & OPAL Launch Michigan's First RNG Plant, Slashing Emissions
GFL Environmental and OPAL Fuels have completed construction of the Emerald RNG facility in Michigan. The plant, situated at the Arbor Hills Landfill, began commercial operations in late 2023, producing over 2.5 million MMBtu of renewable natural gas (RNG) annually.
The Emerald RNG facility, with a design capacity of 10,000 standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM) of landfill gas, is the first of two RNG projects announced by GFL and OPAL. It supplies RNG to GFL's CNG fleet and extends to regional energy markets.
The facility converts landfill gas into RNG, substituting low-carbon fuel for diesel and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It is expected to significantly lower emissions by powering GFL's CNG fleet. This project is part of GFL and OPAL's broader initiative, which includes seven other landfill sites in various development phases.
The Emerald RNG facility, completed in mid-2023, is a significant step towards cleaner energy. It demonstrates GFL and OPAL's commitment to reducing emissions and expanding renewable energy projects.
